Omeka

A guide to Omeka, a web publishing platform for online archives, collections, and exhibits.

Introduction: Omeka

Omeka (oh-MEH-ka) is a simple, open-source web publishing platform for creating dynamic online collections and exhibits. Omeka Classic was created to meet the needs of smaller museums, libraries, and archives in publishing their collections and narrative exhibits online. First released in 2008, Omeka has become the primary content management system (CMS) for thousands of public and private institutions around the globe. Omeka continues to be a free, open-source platform with a rich base of users and a diverse library of themes and plugins.

For news and updates about Omeka and to see how others are using the platform, check out Omeka's Twitter account.

Omeka, Omeka.net, Omeka S

There are three different iterations of Omeka, each slightly different in functionality and purpose. This libguide focuses specifically on Omeka Classic, but  many of the principles and processes are the same.

Omeka Classic is primarily used for individual projects or scholars. It offers a full installation of Omeka on your own independent website and servers. The Office of Digital Research and Publishing (ODRP) provides University students, faculty, and staff with access to Omeka Classic. In collaboration with Library Data And Discovery Solutions (LDADS), a hosting platform is available to create Omeka Classic projects through digitalresearch.bsu.edu. If you are interested in creating an Omeka Classic site, then please contact the Digital Scholarship Strategist at jfbratt@bsu.edu.

Omeka.net is a hosted version of Omeka where you pay for a certain amount of storage, functionality, and design. This is best suited for a scholar who does not have their own website or is unable to manage the installing and maintenance of an Omeka installation. Check out their pricing plans.

Omeka S was developed for institutions interested in connecting resources and collections across multiple Omeka sites. Bracken Library maintains an Omeka S installation to showcase the scholarly production of library staff. It can be found at digitalexhibits.bsu.edu.
