Omeka

A guide to Omeka, a web publishing platform for online archives, collections, and exhibits.

Plugins Introduction

Plugins are software components that add specific functionality to an existing software platform. For Omeka, plugins allow users to expand its functionality for specific projects and purposes. These specific functionalities include digital analysis, importing/exporting items, interfacing with other web-based platforms, incorporating community engagement, and spatial mapping.

Omeka plugins are authored by a number of groups and institutions. The Omeka development team does curate a handful of plugins but the majority of available plugins come from other developers. As such, some plugins may not be updated and some may no longer in development. You can check the version history on the plugin page.

You can learn more about the Omeka plugins, their functionality, and version history by viewing the Omeka Classic Plugins Page or visiting the Github repository where the plugin is stored.

Plugin Installation

Installing a plugin requires server access via an FTP client or web portal to your Omeka installation. Essentially, you download a copy of the plugin from the Omeka Plugins website. Then you upload that folder to your Omeka site's "plugins" folder. A detailed breakdown of how to install and upgrade plugins can be found in the Omeka Classic User Manual under Working with Plugins.
