Research Example

1. Define your topic.
Start your archival research with a sentence or two about your topic
 
Example: "I'm researching women's history in Middletown..."
2. Do preliminary research on your topic.
-Browse finding aids on the website
-Take a look at the clippings files in the reading room
-Search OneSearch for books, theses, and periodicals on your topic
 
Example: To research women's history in Middletown, start with the Middletown Studies Collection website. (Hint: click on Research Tools -> Research Guides -> Women's History Resources)
3. Visit the archives.

1. My family member (name) was one of Muncie's first settlers. Do you have any information on her?

Resources to check:

  • Family Files
  • Search Finding Aids for family name or the individual's name
  • Check the Star Press newspaper General Collection biography files and obituary files
  • Try searching the Digital Media Repository
  • Search the name in the Delaware Co. Index of Names, Persons, and Firms (F532.D3 U55 1939a). This will guide you to the individuals name if it is mentioned in any history books
  • Census microfilm is available in Access services
  • For in depth genealogy questions, you may be referred to the Muncie Public Library. They have many genealogy materials online.

2. I am researching the (name) company, that was in Muncie from (insert date range). What resources do you have available on this? I am interested in drawings and building plans, photographs, and general information. I also believe the company changed locations numerous times over the years.
