Hip hop is an urban cultural movement which began in the 1970s among young African Americans living in the Bronx neighborhood of New York City. Among its four original elements, rap, or the declaiming of semi-spoken rhymes over a musical beat, quickly became the element most widely associated with the larger hip hop culture. DJ-ing, or the manipulation of turntables, breakdancing, and graffiti are its other original elements. Rap and hip hop have had tremendous impact within popular music, lending its sampling and sequencing techniques to electronic dance music (EDM) and becoming the dominant undercurrent in R&B and recent African American popular music. Armed only with turntables, a mixer, and a pile of records, hip-hop DJs and turntable musicians have changed the face of music. However, whilst hip-hop has long been recognized as an influential popular culture both culturally and sociologically, hip-hop music is rarely taken seriously as an artistic genre. Rhymin' and Stealin' begins with a crucial premise: the fundamental element of hip-hop culture and aesthetics is the overt use of preexisting material to new ends. Whether it is taking an old dance move for a breakdancing battle, using spray paint to create street art, quoting from a famous speech, or sampling a rapper or 1970s funk song, hip-hop aesthetics involve borrowing from the past. By appropriating and reappropriating these elements, they become transformed into something new, something different, something hip-hop. The Dozens: A History of Rap's Mama by
