ENG 150 - Professor Pamela Hartman

Popular publications

Newspapers and magazines are examples of popular publications. Unlike scholarly journals or trade publications, popular publications are not written for any specific audience. They contain articles written by journalists and professional writers, to be read by the general public.

The document below will give you more information about how popular publications differ from scholarly or trade publications, and ways to recognize them when you find them.

News databases

These databases are useful for finding content from news outlets - newspapers, magazines, etc. Though they contain many articles from many types of publications, they will feature a source or content type filter that will give you the option to restrict your results to one publication type.

Academic Search Complete contains a mix of scholarly journals, trade publications, and popular publications, so check the "newspapers" and/or "magazines" boxes in the source type filter.

Nexis Uni's search interface is different than those of the other databases on this list. It is a useful database because in addition to newspapers and magazines, it also contains broadcast news transcripts. To find news articles in Nexis Uni, use the "Guided Search" option and chose "news" from the "What are you interested in?" filter.
