Reading Lists (Course Reserves)

How to Place Items on Reading Lists (Course Reserve)

  • Contact Jackie Sciscoe, Architecture Library Coordinator, at 765-285-5857 or jsciscoe@bsu.edu, to place books, articles, or DVDs on reserve or request e-reserves.
  • Stop by the Architecture Library to drop off items or the list of items to go on reserve, or email the list or your syllabus to jsciscoe@bsu.edu. Include:
    • Title
    • Author
    • Call Number
    • Course Number
    • Check out period for the reserve (2hour, 1Day, 3Day, 7Day, or e-reserve)
    • Length of time you want the material on reserve (all semester or list the dates needed)
       
  • E-reserves guidelines:  up to 1 chapter or up to 10-15% from a book (whichever is shorter) and no more than 1 article from a single issue of a journal or magazine. More on course reserves and copyright on the University Libraries' Copyright in the Classroom guide
     
  • How Students Access Reading Lists (course reserves):  
    • Reading Lists can be added as a menu item in Canvas. Instructions for how to set this up.
    • Alternatively, when logged in to Reading Lists, students will see a list of Reading Lists for courses they are enrolled in.
    • Physical items are on reserve in the Architecture Library in the first row of the stacks. Students can ask at the Architecture Library Desk for help finding their course reserves.
    • Links to e-reserves are in the course Reading List. Students log in with their Ball State usernames and passwords to access e-reserves.

Library Instruction Sessions

Library Instruction Sessions

  • Each session is tailored to the research needs of the students and the class.
  • Sessions can be in-person in the classroom or virtual, synchronous or asynchronous, as short as 5 minutes or as long as the entire class period.
  • Possibilities for session topics include:
    • concept mapping a research topic
    • brainstorming keywords for searches
    • finding online resources
    • critically reviewing information sources
    • finding books in the libraries
    • a pop-up library in the class's studio or classroom

Research Guides

Request Library Research Guides for Classes or Projects

  • Research guides highlight resources in support of a class or project topic including:
    • Tips for research and finding library resources
    • Finding articles
    • Links to research databases, books, journals, and other resources that relate to the topic
  • Guides can be created in conjunction with a library instruction session or as standalone resources.

Research Consultations

Arrange for Research Consultations With a Librarian

  • Instructors and students can schedule in-person or virtual appointments with the librarian to discuss research topics or for help using research resources.
  • Contact Amy Trendler, Architecture Librarian, at 765-285-5858 or aetrendler@bsu.edu to schedule a research consultation.
  • For consultations related to the Building Material Samples Collection contact Brad Johnston, Building Materials Librarian, at 765-285-5865 or bcjohnston@bsu.edu for an appointment.

Pop-Up Libraries

Schedule a Pop-Up Library for a Class

  • A pop-up library is a great way to feature books and DVDs on a topic. You can also use it to highlight the books on reserve for your class.
  • We will help select items and bring them to your classroom, the AB atrium, the AT building, or in the Architecture Library.
  • Students can check out books directly from the pop-up library.
