Women's History Resources in Archives and Special Collections

In accordance with its motto "Patriotism, Efficiency, Service," the Altrusa Club aimed to serve less fortunate and deserving people.

The Ball Memorial Hospital Auxiliary was founded as the Woman's Auxiliary of Ball Memorial Hospital on February 7, 1934 through the efforts of Nellie Brown. The purpose of the organization was to promote the interests of the hospital by assisting with the many activities and projects approved by the directors of the hospital to support the management of the hospital and the comfort of its patients.

The Daughters of Isabella is a Roman Catholic women’s organization intended to “unite all Catholic women into a fraternal, beneficial, social society, in order to promote friendships and to establish a bond of unity and truth that will be of mutual interest in time of trouble and
distress."

The Indiana Alpha Chapter of the Delta Sigma Sorority, a philanthropic organization, was established on May 5, 1910 in Muncie, Indiana.

The National League of Women Voters was organized February 14, 1920 as a follow-up organization with the education of Women for their soon to be acquired citizenship – the right to vote.

Epsilon Sigma Omicron, a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, is a reading sorority.

The Muncie Mission was founded in October 1930 by Reverend Eddie Thomas. The building had been donated by the First Baptist Church. The Reverend Eddie Thomas founded the Mission to help men left destitute and bewildered by the economic depression of the 1

The Muncie-Delaware County Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) was organized in 1970 by Betty Newcomb and Virginia Jackson-Adams. NOW’s purpose is, "to take action to bring women into full participation in the mainstream of American society, NOW, exercising all the privileges and responsibilities thereof in truly equal partnership with men."

The club, first named the Mended Hearts Club, was formed as a support group for men and women anticipating open-heart surgery.

The Reticule Circle women’s organization was formed in Albany, Indiana, around 1912. The objective of the circle was the “mental and social improvement of its members, to encourage liberal interchange of thought and action along with civic improvement, school betterment, and charitable effort.”

On November 11, 1902, a group of women from the Riverside area met to form a club which limited membership to that area only.

The Violet Club was a high school sorority formed in Muncie in 1915.

The Woman’s Franchise League of Muncie was formed in the summer of 1912 with the avowed purpose of gaining women’s suffrage.

The club was founded for the purpose of social and intellectual advancement of its members and included activities in philanthropy, domestic science, education, art and literature.

This collection includes minutes, reports, constitutions, contracts, correspondence, financial records, historical manuscripts, newspaper clippings, membership records, office diaries, Phyllis Wheatley Branch records, subject files, scrapbooks, and other materials from the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) in Muncie, Indiana ranging from 1911 to 2013 regarding the administration of the YWCA, YWCA events and activities, and social issues addressed by the YWCA.
