Academic Integrity and Avoiding Plagiarism

Use this guide to understand the importance of Academic Integrity and how to avoid plagiarism.

What is academic integrity?

Integrity, as defined by the American Heritage Dictionary, is the "steadfast adherence to a strict moral or ethical code." In the context of creative and scholastic pursuits at Ball State University, students are expected to maintain a climate of honesty, respect, and personal responsibility in the academic community. To abide by intellectual standards set forth by Ball State University, students will:

1. Honestly represent themselves in terms of ideas and words in regards to any academic exercise.

2. Properly credit the works, ideas, or representations to the respective author(s).

3. Give their audience ample opportunity to consult citations directly.

For more information regarding academic integrity and misconduct, please consult the ethics policy at Ball State University.
