Services: Scholar Carrels

Individual, lockable scholar carrels, equipped with computers and located on the third and fourth floors of Bracken Library, may be requested by faculty members and doctoral and graduate students.

These guidelines describe the carrel allocation process.  Please note that demand for carrel space in Bracken Library often exceeds the supply.

Assignment Based on Research Needs

  • Soundproof and Individual closed carrels are assigned to faculty members and doctoral students with a demonstrated need to assemble library resources for a given research project or doctoral dissertation within a specific time limit.
  • Individual closed carrels are assigned to doctoral/masters candidates to prepare for the preliminary examination or to write a thesis. (Certification by the Dean of the Graduate School is required.)

Application and Assignment Information
Carrels are assigned on a semester basis. Applications for scholar carrels must be submitted each semester. Generally, a person may not maintain a carrel for more than 3 semesters out of any 6 continuous semesters. Demand for scholar carrels is high and reassignments are not guaranteed.

Applications should be submitted no later than the week prior to the start of a semester. Applications received after the semester begins will be accepted, however, the chance of receiving a carrel is greatly diminished.

Carrel assignments for faculty and doctoral students will be made by the second week of the semester and applicants will be notified. In the event that a reapplication for a scholar carrel can not be granted, applicants will also be notified and belongings must be removed immediately.

Carrels will be assigned to individuals according to the following priorities:

  1. Doctoral candidates whose course work is completed, who are now working on their dissertations, and who are certified by the Dean of the Graduate School.
  2. Faculty as space permits. Carrels will be assigned in the following order: Visiting, tenured, tenured-track, contractual, emeritus with volunteer projects for the betterment of the University or the local communities.
  3. Graduate Fellows (doctoral candidates) certified by the Dean of the Graduate School.
  4. Doctoral candidates with course work in progress and who are certified by the Dean of the Graduate School.
  5. Graduate Fellows (masters candidates) certified by the Dean of the Graduate School.
  6. Masters candidates certified by the Dean of the Graduate School. (Assignments will be made after the second week of the semester)
