In Step 2 you can build on what you learned in Step 1 by consulting the law, identifying the elements of the case, and explaining how they apply.

Sources to consult

  • Consult the same sources as in Step 1 plus the following:
  • American Law Reports (ALR)
    • Available in print on the East side of the 3rd floor on ranges 16 and 17 (Gen. Col. KF135 .A51x)
    • What you'll find: Articles that are called annotations that analyze a legal topic as it is applied across a wide number of jurisdictions as well as providing summaries of cases from those jurisdictions that deal with the topic
  • Restatement of the Law, Second, Torts 2d
    • Available in print
    • What you'll find: Model laws which clarify and synthesize case law with concise restatements of the law. They may help you to understand legal theories so you can explain them.
