The Assessor’s Office is located on the first floor of the Delaware County Courthouse. It is a great local resource when conducting research on property boundaries, descriptions, and owners. This office has property records on every property in Delaware County and possesses transfer books, which contain deed records that indicate when a property was transferred from one individual to another, when improvements were made on a property, etc. The office also has plat maps for the entire county. The staff is very helpful and is accustomed to helping students find information for various class projects and assignments.
Directions (From Ball State campus):
From the intersection of Riverside Drive and McKinley Avenue, head east on Riverside Drive. At the intersection of Riverside Drive and Wheeling Avenue, turn right. This will take you into downtown Muncie. Once you cross the bridge over the White River, Wheeling Avenue becomes High Street. At the intersection of High Street and Washington Street, turn left. At the first intersection, turn right onto Walnut Street. The courthouse is on the right side of Walnut Street. Parking is available on the street and a small parking lot is located immediately south of the courthouse as well.

The Delaware County Historical Society operates its library at a small facility located on the north side of Washington Street in downtown Muncie. Although the facility is small, it houses many worthwhile resources, including Muncie City Directories, information on the history of Muncie/Delaware County, cemetery directories, and land entries in deed books from the early to mid-nineteenth century. The staff consists of volunteers who are eager to help students learn more about Muncie and Delaware County and, in some cases, have lived in Muncie all of their lives and have a great deal of first-hand knowledge about the community.

From the intersection of Riverside Drive and McKinley Avenue, head east on Riverside Drive. At the intersection of Riverside Drive and Wheeling Avenue, turn right. The library is located on the left hand side of the road after you cross the first intersection. There is on-street parking only at this location.

The Local History and Genealogy Center is located in the basement of the Carnegie Library, which is located in downtown Muncie. It was moved into the basement in mid-2009 from another building, so a majority of the records have yet to be unpacked and reorganized. There are many good records available to assist students who are researching the history of buildings or prominent individuals in Muncie/Delaware County. Among the many resources that are available, a few of them are vertical files on buildings, individuals, clubs, etc. in Muncie, deed records, funeral records, and some cemetery records. The center also has Sanborn maps of Muncie that contain valuable information on buildings and how property uses have changed over time. The staff is very friendly and willing to help students find information related to various research questions.

The Carnegie Library is located on the southeast corner of Jackson Street and Jefferson Street. A parking lot is located immediately south of the library and can be accessed by turning right onto Jefferson Street and then left into the parking lot.
