Art Research Tips

Researching artists and paintings is similar to researching architects and buildings. There may not be an entire book or article on a particular painting, but you will be able to find information on the artist and/or his or her style, time period, or subject matter.

Look for books and articles on:

  • the artist
  • the style
  • the subject
  • the time period
  • the geographic area

If you have trouble finding information, contact the Architecture Librarian, Amy Trendler,, or stop by the Architecture Library.

A good place to start your search!

  • It's a scholarly resource
  • It includes an encyclopedia of art and artists, Grove Art Online (The Dictionary of Art).
  • You can lookup your artist, read an overview of his or her work, search for more on the style or time period, and use the MultiLink buttons to see if books in the bibliography are in the library.
