Finding Books

Use OneSearch to search for books, DVDs,  journals, and other titles held by the University Libraries.  You can also log in to OneSearch to access reserve materials, renew items online, or to place a hold on materials. 

OneSearch Tips:

  • Enter either keywords, a title or author name and press the search button.  Select the Books / eBook facet in the left column under Content Type.
  • You can use the Library Location facet to limit to the general, reference, or other collection if you wish.

Searching by Subject:

Subject headings are particularly ordered phrases which enable you to find all the materials in our collections on a given topic.  Use the Advanced Search, choose Subject from the drop-down menu, enter the subject heading you wish to search for and press the search button.

African Americans -- Education

African Americans -- Music -- History and Criticism

African Americans -- Race Identity

African Americans--Social conditions--1964

WorldCat

Search WorldCat, the collected catalog of materials owned by over 54,000 libraries worldwide.

WorldCat Search Tips:

  • Change the Rank by setting from Number of Libraries to Relevance.
  • You can limit your search to a specific type or format. 
  • Items owned by Ball State University Libraries are noted in WorldCat.  Use OneSearch to find the call number.
  • Items not owned by Ball State University Libraries can be requested through Interlibrary Loan.  Click on the link in the WorldCat record to request an item through this service.  Books will be mailed to the Ball State University and must be returned there.

Google Book Search

Use Google Books to see previews of books before you check them out or request them from other libraries. 

Note that few books are available online in their entirety due to copyright restrictions. 

Google Books previews are also available in OneSearch for some of the books owned by the Ball State University Libraries.
