Resources for students in music theory and composition courses

Welcome to the Music Theory and Composition Research Guide! This guide is designed to assist with all levels of theory research, from fundamentals and basic ear training to advanced concepts like Schenkerian analysis and serialism. Concurrently, resources on composition are meant to assist in your creative endeavors. Begin at the General Resources page where you will find links to databases and reference entries, a list of notable theorists, and call numbers for theory books in the Music Collection. Then explore pages on several different topics within theory and composition, including Fundamentals, Ear Training, Form and Analysis, Counterpoint, Post-Tonal Techniques, Composition, Instrumentation, and Theory for Non-Music Majors. At these specialized pages, you will find recommended books, applicable reference entries, and helpful online resources on each topic. A final page on Software completes the guide and can help you locate software applications installed on libraries computers. Know of a resource not included in this guide?
